17 Things I’ve Learned in 17 Years While Connecting Exceptionally

Celebrating Exceptional Connections®—and the people who make it extraordinary

When I founded Exceptional Connections in 2009, I believed that bringing people together with intention could create something meaningful. Seventeen years later, I’m grateful for the friendships, collaborations, and acts of generosity that have grown from that belief.
As we commemorate our 17th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on what this community has taught me about relationships, business, networking, and life.
Some lessons emerged through joyful celebrations. Others became clear during challenging seasons, when a thoughtful call, an encouraging word, or a trusted friend made all the difference.
Here are 17 lessons I’m carrying into our next chapter.
- Relationships are king.
Authentic connections have value far beyond a transaction. When we invest in people with patience and care, we build trust that can endure through changing circumstances, careers, and seasons of life.
- The best time to build your network is when you don’t need it.
Strong relationships take time to grow. Connecting consistently gives us opportunities to learn about one another, contribute, and develop friendships long before a need arises.
- There truly is an art to networking.
A business card may help us remember a name, but a meaningful conversation helps us remember a person. The art lies in making someone feel welcome, discovering common ground, and cultivating trust.
- Networking is a skill that can be learned and strengthened.
You don’t have to be the most outgoing person in the room to become an exceptional connector. A warm greeting, a thoughtful question, and a willingness to listen are wonderful places to begin.
- Listening is more powerful than talking.
Everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. When we give someone our full attention, we create space for understanding—and often discover how we can offer meaningful support.
- Collaboration beats competition.
Each person brings different experiences, strengths, and gifts. When we look for ways to work together, we expand what is possible and create opportunities that benefit more than one business.
- Follow-up is where the magic happens.
The first conversation opens a door; follow-up keeps it open. A thoughtful note, a phone call, or a resource that relates to something someone shared says, “I listened, and I remember.”
- Generosity fuels growth.
Share your knowledge, resources, connections, and encouragement freely. Giving without keeping score creates a community where people feel supported and become more willing to contribute themselves.
- Consistency builds credibility.
Showing up regularly gives others the opportunity to know you. Following through on your commitments helps them trust you. Over time, those small, dependable actions build a strong foundation.
- Authenticity attracts.
Meaningful relationships develop when we show up as ourselves. Sharing our enthusiasm, acknowledging our challenges, and being honest about what we can offer makes room for genuine connection.
- Small gestures make a big impact.
A handwritten note, a thoughtful introduction, or a timely referral can brighten someone’s day—or change the direction of their business. We may never fully know how much a simple kindness matters.
- Community creates belonging.
Building a business can sometimes feel lonely. A welcoming community gives us a place to share ideas, ask questions, celebrate progress, and feel connected to something greater than ourselves.
- Curiosity opens doors.
“What are you excited about?” and “How can I support you?” can lead to remarkable conversations. Staying curious helps us discover the person behind the title and possibilities beyond the obvious.
- Celebrating others strengthens relationships.
Recognizing someone’s achievements, contributions, and unique gifts creates shared joy. Whether it’s a major milestone or a quiet step forward, taking time to celebrate says, “Your efforts matter.”
- Networking nurtures resilience.
Trusted relationships help carry us through challenges, changes, and uncertain seasons. Sometimes the most valuable thing our network offers is encouragement from someone who understands.
- Exceptional connections create a powerful ripple effect.
One introduction can lead to a collaboration. That collaboration can create an opportunity, serve a family, or strengthen a community. The impact of a connection often reaches far beyond the people who first met.
- Every relationship should be held as sacred. ❤️
This is the lesson closest to my heart. Each person deserves to be treated with gratitude, integrity, and care. When we honor the trust someone places in us, we nurture relationships that can change the course of our lives.
Celebrating the People Behind the Connections
These lessons represent the heart of Exceptional Connections and the community we’ve been cultivating together since 2009.
Our Connection Circle—Connect • Discover • Listen • Contribute • Follow-up • Nurture—reminds us that relationships grow through intention and ongoing care.
That care also extends beyond our business community. Through our support of Clothes For Kids since 2015, our members and guests have helped turn connection into generosity for local children and families. It’s a beautiful example of what becomes possible when people come together with a shared purpose.
As we celebrate 17 years, my deepest gratitude is for you: the people who have shown up, welcomed a newcomer, offered encouragement, made an introduction, shared a resource, or invited a friend.
You have helped create friendships, collaborations, and countless ripple effects. You have made this community what it is.
As we move into our next chapter, I invite you to choose one of these lessons and put it into practice. Follow up with someone you recently met. Celebrate a friend’s progress. Make a thoughtful introduction. Ask how you can help.
And remember:
“Imagine viewing every chance encounter as a connection that could change the course of your life.” ~Cyndi ONeill-Dady
Thank you for 17 years of connecting exceptionally. I look forward to seeing what we grow together next.
