Every Contact Is a Touch
Building Trust, One Meaningful Interaction at a Time
Featured Author: Cyndi ONeill-Dady
Every interaction is an opportunity to help someone feel seen, heard, and valued. A casual conversation, email, text, virtual meeting, networking event, thoughtful follow-up, or social media exchange can become a meaningful touch in a growing relationship.
One encounter may open the door. Consistent, caring contact helps a relationship take root.

Relationships Are King. Relationships Before Transactions.
Approach each connection with curiosity about the person—their story, goals, challenges, and gifts. A relationship’s value reaches beyond a purchase or referral. Friendship, encouragement, shared wisdom, and collaboration are meaningful outcomes in their own right.
Honor the relationship by practicing the fundamentals in order: Connect • Discover • Listen—before you Contribute.
Connect to open the door. Discover to learn what matters. Listen to understand. Then contribute with care.
When someone I have just met offers unsolicited advice or proposes an introduction without knowing anything about my life, business, or values, I feel they have skipped the opportunity to understand me—and I find myself less open to their suggestions.
Even a well-intended suggestion is more meaningful when it responds to something I have actually shared.
Before deciding how you can help, take time to discover what matters to the person. Listen before offering solutions. Look for ways to contribute before asking for something in return.

Connection Begins with Common Ground
Look for shared interests, experiences, values, or aspirations. Common ground creates a sense of relatedness and gives a new relationship a place to begin.
A sincere compliment can also open a conversation:
- “I love the pattern on your scarf.”
- “You have such a welcoming presence.”
- “I appreciated the thoughtful question you asked.”
Acknowledge something you genuinely notice and appreciate. Then let curiosity guide you. Ask a thoughtful question, listen to the answer, and allow what you learn to shape the conversation.
The Foundation Can Begin in One Conversation
Connecting, discovering, and listening do not have to take weeks or months. One thoughtful conversation can establish a meaningful foundation when both people have space to share and feel understood.
That conversation matters. It helps you learn whether an idea, resource, or introduction would be welcome and relevant.
Before contributing, ask:
“Would you be open to an idea?”
“Would that introduction be helpful to you?”
Give the person room to choose. Asking permission shows respect and allows your contribution to grow out of understanding.
Trust Grows Through Consistency
Think of 12–25 meaningful touches as a reminder to nurture relationships over time, rather than a fixed formula or a countdown to a sale. Some relationships develop quickly; others need more time. Let the other person’s interest and responsiveness guide your pace.
Each touch should have a purpose: express appreciation, offer encouragement, share a relevant resource, make a welcome introduction, or follow through on a promise.
Remembering something someone told you—and asking about it later—shows that you were listening. A simple “How did your presentation go?” or “How is that project coming along?” can demonstrate care.
Respecting someone’s time, preferences, and boundaries builds trust, too.
Be Someone Others Can Trust
Be authentic. Be yourself. Let people experience the person behind your title.
Be a person of integrity. Keep your word, communicate honestly, and take responsibility when you fall short.
Be knowledgeable in your field. Continue learning, share your expertise when it is welcome, and acknowledge when a question falls outside your experience.
Be consistent. Let your actions reinforce your words, one interaction at a time.
Nurture Your Relationship Garden
At Exceptional Connections®, our Connection Circle offers six practices for turning an initial contact into an ongoing relationship:
Connect • Discover • Listen • Contribute • Follow-up • Nurture
Connecting opens the door. Discovering reveals what matters. Listening deepens understanding. Contributing offers relevant support. Following up demonstrates care. Nurturing keeps the relationship growing.
Like a garden, relationships flourish through attention, patience, and care. A thoughtful conversation plants a seed. Following through gives it nourishment. Continued care gives it room to blossom.
As you approach your next conversation or follow-up, ask yourself: “How can I help this person feel seen, heard, and valued?”
Every contact is a touch. Make each touch an expression of care, grounded in understanding—and give trust time to grow.
