The Nest, The Flight, and the Power of Community

One of nature’s most fascinating lessons comes from wild birds. As baby birds grow, parent birds begin making the nest less comfortable. They stop bringing food as frequently, remove the soft feathers that once cushioned the nest, and spend more time perched nearby rather than hovering over their young.

Why?
Because the nest was never meant to be a permanent home.
At just the right moment, the parent bird creates enough discomfort to encourage the fledgling to do the one thing it was born to do—spread its wings and fly.
Some species even give a gentle nudge, forcing the young bird to discover that the very wings it has always possessed are capable of carrying it far beyond the safety of the nest.
Last month, I experienced my own "bird's nest" moment.
Under doctor's orders, the day before our event, I was required to remain in bed and was unable to attend our June Exceptional Connections Networking Luncheon. For someone who has spent nearly 17 years planning the event, scheduling the speaker, creating the agenda, personally welcoming guests, facilitating conversations, and guiding our community gatherings, stepping away was a new experience.
Yet something beautiful happened.
The nest did not fall apart.
The community flew.
Laurie Hardie graciously stepped forward to open the meeting, guide our Contribution team, welcome attendees, and beautifully introduce our Spotlight Speaker, Laurie Thibert who I heard offered an inspiring talk.
Kim Pelham went above and beyond—making event copies, driving to my home to pick up and drop off supplies ensuring everything was available, dialing in all things AV with Chuck and stepping in to open the meeting with social media check as well as close the meeting with enthusiasm.
Kathy Riemann graciously stepped up for the first time to facilitate the registration table, and made everyone feel welcome and appreciated.
Chuck Oxford embraced a leadership and sponsor role while facilitating a valuable experience that strengthened connections throughout the room. To no surprise he kept everyone on track and on time.
Along with many other members of our Contribution Team and our Champion Connector Leadership Team people stepped up. They jumped in. They took ownership. They supported one another. Most importantly, they demonstrated that Exceptional Connections has never been about one person.
It is about a community.
A community built on friendship, contribution, trust, and a shared commitment to helping one another succeed.
One of the greatest lessons leaders can learn is that true leadership is not measured by how indispensable we become. It is measured by how well we empower others to lead, thrive and take ownership.
For years, I have encouraged our members to move beyond transactional networking and build authentic relationships. This month, I witnessed those principles come alive in the most beautiful way.
The show went on.
Not because I was there.
But because you were.
What could have been a disappointment became a powerful reminder that Exceptional Connections is filled with capable, caring, servant-hearted leaders who are willing to step forward when needed.
Like the young birds discovering their wings, our community demonstrated that it is stronger, more resilient, and more capable than ever before.
My heart is overflowing with gratitude.
Thank you to Laurie, Kim, Kathy & Chuck, our Contribution Team, our Champion Connectors, and every member who helped make the June Networking luncheon a success.
You reminded me that the strongest communities are not built around a single leader.
They are built by people who are willing to lead together.
And that may be one of the most exceptional connections of all.
When we intentionally nurture relationships, we don't just build networks—we build communities that can soar, even when the person who started the nest needs to rest.
