You Are Enough

This was first presented in December of 2019 at an Exceptional Connections event. I read it loud and proud as I really do believe this topic is important for us as business women.

In my 20 plus years as a life coach, I’ve discovered that I am not the only one who believes I am not enough. I’ve learned from my clients that most of us believe we have a purpose, but it’s just out of our reach and that we are different. The normal things just don’t work for us. When we realize we are not alone and that not enough is just a lie that we tell ourselves, we can begin to master the courage to take the steps to our now purpose. I’m five years old. It’s a first day of kindergarten in Seattle. The bell rings at the end of the day and we file out to the sidewalk to meet our parents. One by one, my classmates leave with their parents until I’m the only one left. My teacher says, I wonder where your mom is and I say, that’s okay, I know my way home. I didn’t. So my teacher says to a five-year-old little girl in Seattle, okay. I started walking and finally saw a landmark. I made my way to my house. When I open the door, my mom and baby sister are playing. My mom looks up and says, oh, I guess I don’t have to pick you up. At that moment, I decided she was telling me she never had to pick me up. I told myself I didn’t matter and that I wasn’t enough.

And then after going through some coaching programs, I revisited this event and looked at it with the eyes of an adult. I realized my mom was having an o-crap moment and was saying, I don't have to pick you up today. We all make decisions as children and sometimes those decisions determine our  mindset. I didn't realize that I had been living my life in a way that said in every way possible, I don't matter. And now that I have realized this, I'm telling myself a different story and my brain is believing it. I matter, I am loved. Much different than that of a jealous and scared five-year-old. Our brain believes what we tell it. To live a life of purpose, often it's just changing the story we are telling ourselves. You are a community who are obviously living your purpose. My passion is to support everyone I meet in living their purpose.
